2024 Crushing Season Back on Track as Resolution Reached in Sugar Industry Dispute

September 13, 2024

Hinchinbrook MP and Katter’s Australian Party Deputy Leader Nick Dametto has welcomed the resolution of the ongoing dispute between Wilmar Sugar and the unions representing mill workers. Over the last two days, employees were given the opportunity to vote on a proposed Enterprise Agreement put forward by Wilmar Sugar.

“We’re pleased to see that all parties have come to an agreement that enables the 2024 crushing season to get back on track,” Mr. Dametto said.

“It’s great news for the industry and the local economy, and I’m sure everyone in the industry is relieved to get back to work.”

“The extended negotiations have had a noticeable impact on the local economy, but coming to this resolution should provide a lot of optimism for the community for the remainder of the season.

“Sugar cane is the backbone of the Herbert district’s economy, and ensuring a successful crushing season is in everyone’s best interest.

“I look forward to seeing the industry move forward and continue to support our region.”
