Bob Katter pays tribute to tourism pioneer Mick Borzi

November 27, 2024

KENNEDY MP Bob Katter has paid tribute to true visionary, former Mareeba Mayor, Mick Borzi, who played an integral role in transforming Cairns into the global tourist destination it is today.

“I have vivid memories of my own experiences in Cairns. My family had good friends who moved there to manage a hotel, and we decided to take a holiday. We lasted less than two days. It was a greasy, hot, ugly backwater – we couldn’t get out fast enough. We fled to Atherton. I never would have imagined that this little backwater could one day be transformed into a world-class destination. But thanks to Mick and others like him, it has,” Mr Katter said.

“It all began when an American entrepreneur had the idea to build a chairlift in Cairns – a vision brought to life by his Australian son, Ken Chapman. This was just the beginning. Paul Kamsler and Peter Abeles built the first five-star hotel in Cairns, and Mick Borzi’s promotion of the area soon followed. He even managed to bring Lee Marvin, the most recognisable actor in the world at the time, to Cairns – a pivotal moment that helped put the city on the international map.

“And let’s not forget the international airport. I thought Cairns was lucky to even have an airport, but Mick's influence led to its expansion, making it a key gateway for tourists. His work laid the foundation for the city’s booming tourism industry.

“Mick was a humble man, always grounded in the values of hard work and service to his community. The last time I visited him, he and his wife were working on their mango plantations, embodying the spirit of self-sufficiency and dedication that defined his life. And when I last saw him in the public arena, he was working as a volunteer for St Vincent de Paul, helping others in need.

“If you were ever going to build a statue in North Queensland, it should be for Mick Borzi. His leadership and legacy will continue to benefit Cairns and its people for generations to come.”
