The Castle Law movement across the state continues to grow with the parliamentary petition sponsored by Hinchinbrook MP Nick Dametto, now smashing past 77,000 signatures, making it the fourth largest petition tabled in the Queensland Parliament.
The biggest petition on record remains a 2009 objection to increased vehicle registration costs, which attracted 109,935 signatures. With support building by the day, Mr Dametto believes Queenslanders calling for Castle Law can beat that number.
“People are fed up with feeling like targets in their own homes,” Mr Dametto said.
“This week alone, Townsville is averaging seven break and enter offences, and over eight unlawful use of motor vehicle offences every day. People are waking up to find their homes invaded and their cars gone - a devastating realisation.
“Despite the government implementing some of their election commitments on youth crime, there is still no genuine deterrent for these hardcore offenders. The heavily eroded reputation of our justice system remains in tatters as offenders continue to cycle through its revolving doors.
“A government that refuses to stand up leaves people no choice but to do it themselves. Across Australia we’re seeing the fallout of a lack of leadership. Queenslanders deserve the right to defend their homes and families when no one else will.
“Castle Law is about tipping the scales back in favour of the victims. Every name added to this petition is another person saying they are sick of being abandoned by a government that refuses to do what needs to be done.
“Crime doesn’t wait, and people shouldn’t have to either. It’s time to put the power back into the hands of the people and give them the legal protection to defend themselves, their loved one and their property by any means.”
