The Katter’s Australian Party (KAP) has thrown their political support behind the DriveIt NQ motorsport and driver education facility, backing the push to secure the final $10 million in funding needed to complete the project.

The additional funding will enable the construction of a speedway and finalise the drag strip, a critical step in fulfilling the facility’s full potential. With the state government already committing more than $10 million towards the project, Mr Dametto said the KAP was committed to ensuring the project gets across the finish line.

“This facility is not just about motorsport; it’s about providing a safe, controlled environment for North Queenslanders to enjoy their passion for driving and motorsport,” he said.

“In the fight to stop illegal hooning on public streets, we need facilities like DriveIt NQ to keep young drivers engaged in the sport safely and off our roads.

“We need a future state government that recognises the importance of regional motorsport facilities and continues to invest in them. KAP is ready to fight for the completion of DriveIt NQ and ensure North Queensland gets the world-class motorsport precinct it deserves.”

DriveIt NQ Director Greg Fitzgerald echoed these sentiments, outlining the wide-reaching benefits the completed facility would offer Townsville and surrounding communities.

“DriveIt NQ aims to evolve into a world-class multi-user motorsport destination, catering to national-level circuit racing, drag racing, and speedway. We’ll also be able to host driver education programs, corporate events, and product testing,” Mr. Fitzgerald said.

“The fully developed facility is expected to deliver over $38 million annually in economic benefit and will enhance Townsville’s amenity and liveability by attracting motorsport enthusiasts, tourists, and spectators alike.”

Mr. Fitzgerald detailed the work already completed at Drive-IT NQ, including the development of general amenities, a 2.75-kilometre circuit track, and the large vehicle manoeuvring area, all made possible through federal and state grants as well as local business contributions.

However, additional funding is still required to complete the safety barriers for both the drag strip and circuit, install utilities, and construct a speedway – a vital feature not seen in Townsville since 2006.

“For a relatively small investment, these next steps will deliver significant social and economic returns, particularly in a regional capital like Townsville. The value for money delivered by DriveIt NQ has been incredible, and with continued government support, we’re ready to push forward.”
