KENNEDY MP Bob Katter has called for immediate government action following a series of tragic road deaths in Far North Queensland (FNQ), most recently being a tragic fatal crash in [i]Edmonton.
“The whole of FNQ are beginning to rise up in rage,” Mr Katter warned.
“We are seeing fatal accidents every three-to-four weeks now and the government, 2000km away, couldn’t care less.”
Drawing comparisons, Katter highlighted that Greater Cairns, with a population similar to Canberra, has far fewer infrastructure investments.
“Brisbane gets $36 billion and 36 kilometres of tunnels. North Queensland gets nothing,” he said.
Mr Katter said he would be seeking discussions with local councils and plans to convene a regional road crisis conference.
“I’ve discussed with the deputy mayor in Cairns, and he is of the same opinion as myself.”
Discussions have also taken place with RACQ about the state of the Bruce Highway, with plans for a slow convoy from Brisbane to Cairns next year.
“It’s time for action before more blood is spilled. This government must be held accountable. It really has come to a stage now where quite frankly the next blood to be spilt will be that of the government in Brisbane.
“Let us pray for these poor families that have had such tragic loss over the last few months and I say, let us make sure that the government in Brisbane also says their prayers but then again, most of them don't believe in God.”
