Official Opening of the Cardwell and Port Hinchinbrook STP – A Major Milestone in the Normalisation Process

January 15, 2025

The long-awaited Cardwell and Port Hinchinbrook Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP) has officially opened, marking a significant milestone for the Cassowary Coast region. The opening was attended by representatives from all levels of government, including Cassowary Coast Regional Council Mayor Teresa Millwood, Division 1 Councillor Chris Littlemore, Senator Anthony Chisholm, and Member for Mulgrave Terry James, who represented the Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure, and Planning.

Nick Dametto MP, Member for Hinchinbrook, praised the persistence and hard work of those that made the project a reality, describing it as a major step forward for the region.

“The STP in Cardwell has been years in the making, and it’s a testament to what can be achieved when all levels of government work together,” Mr. Dametto said.

“Before this plant was built, we faced a serious environmental issue at Port Hinchinbrook, with untreated sewage overflowing into the Great Barrier Reef. That was something that no government could ignore.

“The project was delivered by Haslin Constructions on time and on budget which is a remarkable achievement in this day and age. I want to thank Haslin Constructions for their hard work and dedication in seeing this project through.

“Funding for the STP was a collaborative effort. The Federal Government contributed $6 million, while the State Government provided a total of $13.3 million, including a crucial $7 million shortfall delivered by the former Deputy Premier Steven Miles late last year. This funding ensured that ratepayers in Port Hinchinbrook weren’t left to carry the burden of the shortfall.

“Special mention needs to go to the Hon. Bob Katter MP who played a pivotal role in securing the $6 million in federal funding for this project.

“Delivering a project of this size will bring great benefits to the Cardwell area. When governments invest in a region, it creates consumer confidence, and we’ve already seen land values here rise over the last 18 months.

“Additionally, this project represents a key step in the ongoing normalisation process of Port Hinchinbrook. “This is a turning point for the community. It addresses an environmental crisis, improves the liveability for residents and visitors, and ensures the Cassowary Coast can continue to flourish.

“Finally, I want to thank those who supported my office in lobbying for the funding, particularly the final $7 million shortfall. This outcome wouldn’t have been possible without the backing of residents and ratepayers who stood with us to push for this funding. Their support was vital.”

The opening of the new STP is a significant milestone in the process towards restoring Cardwell as the jewel in the crown of the Cassowary Coast.
