President’s Message

August 10, 2018

In March this year, KAP State Member for Hill Shane Knuth re-introduced the Safer Waterways Bill to Parliament, calling on the Innovation Tourism Development and Environment Committee to schedule public hearings in North Queensland.

The Public Hearings are to be held this month in Cairns, Port Douglas, Townsville and Mackay.

The Safer Waterways Bill calls for self-management of crocodiles through the establishment of the Queensland Crocodile Authority based in Far North Queensland. This enables a fast response and more effective management of crocodile numbers in the region, particularly in heavily populated areas, and tourist destinations.

The public hearings are a very positive step in allowing North Queenslanders the opportunity to address the committee and describe the problems first hand, demonstrating how big an issue crocodile numbers are to those that live and work in the region.  We strongly encourage you to take this opportunity to have your say and support the Safer Waterways Bill.

The hearings are open to members of the public to attend as observers.  You can also register your interest to speak at one of the hearings by emailing ITDEC@parliament.qld.gov.au or phone 07 3553 6662.
