Stop the woke before all Queenslanders go broke: Katter

June 12, 2024

When Brisbane’s LNP and Labor party went woke and signed up to emissions targets, they signed up to send Queenslander’s broke, the Katter’s Australian Party (KAP) leader and member for Traeger, Robbie Katter has said, introducing a motion to the Queensland Parliament to provide clarity once and for all for Queenslanders on the effect of emissions targets.

“Queensland only contributes less than 0.4% of global emissions, yet we have both major parties determined to pursue ideologically driven emissions that cost everyday Queenslanders – at a time when we can least afford any hit to the hip pocket,” the member for Traeger said.

The KAP motion calls for the Parliament to take all necessary steps to reverse the 75% emissions targets agreed to by both sides of the house.

“My power bill is now more than $10,000 in Mount Isa, and that is not unusual for North Queensland,” Mr Katter said.

“In the last five years, power utility workers haven’t had large wage increases, the cost of transmission hasn’t fundamentally changed – the only change is a marked shift to emissions targets and renewable energy.

“Queensland has been built on the cheap, reliable, and bountiful high-quality coal, and to blindly turn away from the resources we have been blessed with, is turning our back on Queensland’s prosperity.

“The cost-of-living crisis is affecting all Queenslanders, and the answer from Brisbane’s parties is to throw our own money around like confetti.

“Power bill relief doesn’t change the power cost, and emissions targets that both ALP and LNP are pursuing will only continue to result in sky-high power costs.

“Today we are offering all members, regardless of their party, to support winding back these damaging targets that the ALP and LNP supported, and support putting the people of Queensland and their wallets before ideology,” the KAP leader said.
