KAP Extends its Reach: Nick Dametto to contest Townsville Mayoralty

September 26, 2025

On behalf of The Katter’s Australian Party (KAP) Ben Fusco, Party President, is proud to announce a bold new chapter in its mission to deliver strong, independent leadership for North Queensland.

Today, we confirm that sitting Member of Parliament Nick Dametto will contest the position of Mayor of Townsville City.

This is a moment of growth. KAP is expanding its influence into all three levels of government: federal, state, and now local. Our fight in state parliament remains strong and uninterrupted, but with this strategic move, we are ensuring that the people of North Queensland have powerful representation at every level.

Nick Dametto has long been a champion of KAP’s core policies, from fighting youth crime with Castle Law and Relocation Sentencing, to advocating for Bruce Highway upgrades, Food Recovery Funds, and restoring the freedoms our communities once enjoyed. His track record speaks for itself, and his leadership in Townsville will be vital as the region faces pivotal decisions on projects like the future of the Copper Refinery, CopperString, Lansdown, and Jet Zero.

“This is a strategic opportunity. Not just for Nick’s career, but for the future of North Queensland.”

KAP is already preparing for a smooth transition in state parliament. A strong candidate will be announced shortly, with many capable leaders waiting in the wings. The by-election is an opportunity to double our strength and expand our reach.  We see it as an opportunity. An opportunity to give North Queensland an even louder voice.”

This move is about expansion. KAP acknowledges the independence of local government, and we support Nick’s commitment to serve Townsville with integrity and autonomy. But make no mistake this is a step forward for our cause. Our strength now spans federal, state, and local government, allowing us to deliver on the big goals for North Queensland:

Securing Castle Law, driving momentum for a North Queensland State, advocacy for Hells Gates Dam, the Bradfield Scheme, and a sovereign fuel ethanol industry.

“Let me be clear. The people of this electorate will not be left without strong representation. Our party is united, and our fight for the North will continue, stronger than ever.”

KAP remains committed to loyal, grassroots leadership. We are growing. We are expanding. And we will continue to fight for the North at every level of government.

“Strong, loyal leadership  is what North Queensland needs right now and KAP is delivering.”

“Never has there been a greater need for North Queensland representation that is not Brisbane affiliated.”
