Queenslanders voted decisively against more bureaucracy for a ‘Voice’, yet the Government seems determined to bring it in anyway, Katter’s Australian Party (KAP) Leader and Member for Traeger Robbie Katter has said.
“While crime continues to run rampant, and the cost of living continues to blow out, the Government is busy setting up more bureaucracy to do what a good Member of Parliament should be doing,” Mr Katter said.
He reflected on the KAP’s long history of representing First Australian communities.
“Some of my father’s proudest achievements as a minister are delivering title deeds so First Australians could own their own home,” he said.
“As the member for Traeger, I see it a privilege to listen and learn from First Australians right throughout the electorate, and that’s exactly what the government should do – its job.
“We don’t need yet more bureaucrats and departments to give some councils more voice than others.
“Cabinet should be responsive to all Queenslanders, and Local Members. That’s what democracy is supposed to do.
“We pride ourselves on representative democracy, and here’s the Queensland Government putting in place access for some over others, with no details yet made public.
“It’s incredible to see the LNP Government going again the clear wishes of 68 per cent of Queenslanders.”
Mr Katter said the results of the Voice referendum were clear, and if the Government continued to ignore such a large majority, it set a dangerous precedent.
“The Government needs to focus on what will make a difference to all Queenslanders, like listening to more than 120,000 petitioners calling for Castle Law in Queensland,” he said.
