KAP Tries to Help LNP Keep ‘No Change to Abortion’ promise’, Save Lives of Unborn Queenslanders

Why would the LNP be signing off on removing conditions for Midwives to administer abortion pills? Leader of the KAP and state Member for Traeger Robbie Katter has asked.

The Medicines and Poisons (Medicines) Amendment Regulation 2026, Subordinate Legislation No. 16 of 2026, was tabled in the House on 3 March 2026. Part 2 commenced on 1 March 2026 and clause 5 updated the approved versions of several Extended Practice Authorities, including the Extended Practice Authority Midwives from version five to version six.

“It’s quite technical, but in the update from version five to version six, the Minister has signed into regulation the removal of the need for employer approval for a midwife to administer MS-2 Step,” Mr Katter explained.

“MS-2 Step is not a drug for the common cold, or even antibiotics – it’s a drug that kills defenceless, unborn children.

“Changes to the oversight of chemicals, dressed up as ‘medicine,’ that end the life of Queenslanders should not be swept under the carpet by a minister signing a regulation.  That’s why the KAP have brought this to the Parliament today,” he said.

The KAP Leader detailed that while the Government and the Minister were likely to attempt to use parliamentary technicalities to silence debate on what is an uncomfortable topic for many, it cannot be too inconvenient to debate.

“There are many things that are easier, and more popular to debate in Parliament, but I’m yet to be convinced of any topic more important than that of actively taking a life,” Mr Katter said.

“When there were 17,009 prescriptions (37% of Australia’s total) for MS-2 Step in 2024, you have to ask the question, ‘why on earth do we need to relax the requirements?

“I’m fully aware that the regulation also extended access to flu vaccinations and medication, and that’s why it’s so disappointing that the government has used this update to relax abortion safeguards.

“If they didn’t include changes to MS-2 Step, we wouldn’t be here,” Mr Katter said.
