Government Inaction to Reverse Demise of Australian Grown Food on the Menu Exposed: Katter

When you can’t order a single piece of Australian Seafood at the pub, that’s when you know the Woke brigade are winning in their quest to shut down the Australian food industry.  Yet the Queensland government is refusing to act – aligning themselves with Labor’s ideologically driven quest, the Leader of the KAP and state Member for Traeger Robbie Katter has said.

“Thanks to KAP’s seafood labelling push we can now see where the seafood at restaurants around Australia is from, but it sure paints an ugly picture,” he said.

From 1 July this year, all restaurants, cafes, pubs and other hospitality businesses need to say where their seafood comes from.

“Our fishing industry is on the ropes with ideologically driven bans driving out more operators, and the LNP government is actively choosing to do nothing about reversing Labor’s pandering to UNESCO,” the KAP leader said.

“The now Fisheries Minister in opposition said he’d make decisions based on science, and that Labor’s bans were causing devastation to fishing communities – well now’s his chance to do something and not just blame Labor.

“The minister is trying to ride two horses at once when he says, ‘it would be reckless to reverse these changes’ and in the same statement says, ‘The vision of the Crisafulli Government’s Fishing and Seafood Action plan is to grow the sector’!

“Which will it be?

“You can’t tacitly stand by while Labor’s policy and bans devastate fishing communities and say you want to grow the sector.  It needs a shoulder to the wheel and new policy to turn it around, otherwise you’re just endorsing Labor’s demise of our ability to put Australian food on the table,” the KAP leader said.

In 2021 Mr Katter introduced the Food (Labelling of Seafood) Amendment Bill 2021 which Queensland Labor voted down.  Federal Labor then adopted the policy in 2025.

“I challenge everyone, next time you’re out for lunch or dinner, check where your seafood is coming from, and only support Australian,” Mr Katter said.

“Our remaining Australian fishing operators need all the support we can give them, and supporting imported seafood, from who knows where, and with goodness knows what quality controls, just plays into the hands of those who want to shut down Australian food production.

“And as for the Woolies owned pub in Townsville, with not one seafood meal with an ‘A’ for Australian seafood – shame on you!

“First, you rip off Aussie farmers in your supermarkets, and now you’re exposed as importing all your seafood,” Mr Katter said.
