Dametto set to Face Parliament Committee for Castle Law Bill Public Briefing

August 19, 2024

Katter’s Australian Party (KAP) Deputy Leader and Member for Hinchinbrook, Nick Dametto MP, is gearing up to confront a parliamentary committee at a crucial public briefing on his Castle Law Bill today (Monday, 19th August, 2024). [1]

With overwhelming support from Queenslanders, the Castle Law Bill aims to restore the fundamental right for homeowners to defend themselves, their loved ones and their property without fear of legal repercussions.

Mr Dametto said he was eager to appear before the Community Safety and Legal Affairs Committee to explain in detail his bill and answer the tough questions as to why this law change is necessary.

“Queenslanders from all walks of life have thrown their weight behind Castle Law by signing a parliamentary petition. Today I carry the weight of 40,000 petitioners calling for Castle Law to be implemented here in Queensland,” Mr Dametto said.

“People don’t feel safe in their homes. They’re over the crime and over the excuses of government. They have become a soft target for criminals, all we are asking with this legislative change is to give the right to potential victims of crime to defend themselves in their own home.

“For too long the law has been overly focused on protecting perpetrators while forgetting the victims. Castle Law seeks to swing the pendulum back. Queenslanders no longer want to live in constant fear of potential criminal attacks, they want to feel safe in their own home knowing that the law would protect them if they were faced with having to protect themselves.

“Today the committee will likely be focused on pulling Castle Law apart to try and discourage and discredit the KAP bill but I will be concentrating my time during the public briefing to gauge on behalf of Queenslanders, the committee’s initial reactions and support, or lack of, as we come dangerously close to the October state election.

“Queenslanders in large, support Castle Law. Today will be a defining moment for Queensland’s two major political parties, their members attitudes during this briefing will likely indicate whether or not they support this legislative change.
