Katter turns blowtorch on Orwellian “Ministry of Truth” Anti-Freedom law

November 6, 2024

OUTSPOKEN federal MP Bob Katter has set a blowtorch to the Communications Legislation Amendment (Combatting Misinformation and Disinformation) Bill 2024, condemning the government for implementing a “Big Brother” surveillance state that fundamentally undermines Australians' freedoms.

Katter said he the bill grants sweeping powers to the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) to monitor and control public opinion in unprecedented ways.

“Who are these ACMA people? They’re hand-picked by bureaucrats here in Canberra, people who believe they have the right to decide what Australians can and can’t say. This bill suppresses dissent and enforces the values and views of the Canberra elite on every Australian. Mr Government, just who the hell do you think you are?!”

Drawing comparisons to Orwellian surveillance and ‘dystopian’ thought control, Katter argued that the bill resembles the authoritarian regimes in George Orwell’s 1984 and Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, both of which depict societies where every action and thought is policed.

"They've stripped these classics from the school reading list, and maybe it’s because they know people would recognise the parallels,” Katter said. “It’s simple, ACMA’s “thought police” are here, and can now monitor what you say.”

Katter warned that ACMA’s regulatory powers, presented under the guise of preventing “misinformation,” threaten the heart of Australian freedom.

“This bill represents the tyranny of a minority, a small group in Canberra telling Australians what they can believe, say, and share,” he declared. “Our ancestors came to Australia to escape exactly this kind of oppression—a life ruled by elites who control every aspect of their lives.”

The Member for Kennedy emphasised that the intrusion of ACMA’s powers extends beyond political speech, reaching into the everyday lives of Australians.

“They’re already telling us how we can raise our kids, what we can say in our own homes, and even this week we learned that a ifederal government department imposed a rule to ban the use of the Australian flag. Now they are banning tree houses and billy boiling too. Our grandparents sacrificed everything to secure a free Australia, but this government seems intent on ripping those freedoms apart.”

Katter went on to remind Australians of their nation’s hard-fought values of freedom and independence, saying the current legislation is an insult to generations who fought to protect those ideals.

“Our family lost a son in World War 1 and World War 2 – what for?! For the values of freedom and respect for every Australian,” Katter said passionately. “Now, I’m ashamed of how these public servants in Canberra

are systematically dismantling everything we hold dear. They’ve spat on our flag, and for every day I have left in my life, I’m going to fight this.”

He called for Australians to recognise the impending erosion of freedoms and to resist the government’s “disinformation” laws before they take effect and warned that the legislation marks a turning point for Australian democracy—a drift toward censorship that’s uncharacteristic of Australia’s free spirit.

“Make no mistake, this is just the beginning,” Katter warned. “ACMA’s interference in our speech is not about misinformation; it’s about controlling the narrative, enforcing Canberra’s values, and making sure every Australian falls in line.”
