LNP need to tell it straight – riding two horses won’t wash with Queensland public: Katter

June 26, 2024

What will it be? Support for emissions targets or coal power?  Support of $20 Billion Olympics or North Queensland infrastructure?  Nuclear power or not?  The LNP must stop trying to ride two horses and say it how it is – do the LNP support the people and industry of North Queensland or are they selling out to suck up to the inner-city Brisbane voters, Katter’s Australian Party (KAP) leader, and member for Traeger, Robbie Katter has said.

“Despite what the LNP and Labor may think, North Queenslanders have a damn good BS radar, and listening to the messages coming from Brisbane Headquarters on both sides, the radar is going off,” Mr Katter said.

“The fact remains – you cannot talk emissions targets while backing coal power, you cannot support the Olympic Games without stripping North Queensland of infrastructure, and you cannot oppose renewables like pumped hydro without nuclear.  So, what will it be?” the KAP asked.

Mr Katter reaffirmed the KAP’s position that emissions targets are the impetus for skyrocketing Queensland energy prices, and nuclear power is a viable alternative, alongside coal and strategic renewables.

“We are seeing the utter chaos in Victoria caused by a government who think they can live without coal and gas energy – it’s utter nonsense,” he said.

“It would be nice to think that the Victorian example is simply a textbook example that we can observe and learn from what happens when a state signs on for environment targets, but because of the National Energy Market (NEM), Queenslanders are the ones paying for ideologically driven rubbish.

“Nuclear is a clear, logical, and feasible power supply for Queensland into the next generation.  Our kids want to be able to turn the lights on and power the next generation of industry, and without a sensible mix of generation technologies, this potential will not be reached.

“Queensland, connected to the NEM is now paying more for power as the Victorians are importing more and more Queensland power – meaning less for us here.

“How is this in the interest of Queensland?” the KAP leader asked?

“The ALP and LNP voted together to plunge Queensland into the same plight, and diversion tactics like talking about Callide coal powered generator will not change the impact of the emissions targets legislated by the ALP and LNP.

“I’m confident that North Queenslanders can see though the deception of the Brisbane parties, but they should all come clean!” the KAP leader said.
